Food as Medicine

You've probably heard the phrase "you are what you eat." But in functional health, we take that a step further: you are what you absorb, and you are what your food ate.

Nutrition is always the foundation when it comes to healing from the inside out. At Thrive Health & Wellness, we want to help you move away from prescription medications if possible, and start using food as medicine. Eating enough protein is important for your metabolism and hormone balance, but the quality of your protein is just as important as the amount.

Why the Quality of Your Meat Matters for Your Health

If you struggle with chronic inflammation, weight that won't budge, or autoimmune flare-ups, it may be time to take a closer look at the meat you eat.

Food as Medicine: The Problem with Conventional Meat

In traditional healthcare, patients often get a quick prescription for high cholesterol or joint pain and are told to "eat leaner meats." This advice misses the real issue of how modern, conventional meat affects our bodies.

Most conventional livestock are kept in feedlots and fed lots of grains, soy, and byproducts to make them gain weight quickly. They often get regular antibiotics to prevent disease in crowded spaces, and sometimes synthetic hormones to speed up growth.

When you eat conventional meat, you are getting more than just protein. You are also eating something that can cause inflammation in your body:

Skewed Fatty Acids

Meats from grain-fed animals have much higher levels of Omega-6 fatty acids, which can cause inflammation, and much lower levels of Omega-3s, which help reduce inflammation.

Gut Health Disruptors

Residues from antibiotics and unnatural animal diets can upset your gut bacteria, which may lead to poor digestion and food sensitivities.

Hormone Imbalances

Chemicals in conventionally raised animal products can disrupt your hormones and affect your thyroid function.

Clean Meat: Foundational Medicine

While conventional meat can trigger inflammation, clean, naturally raised meat can help your body heal.

Animals that can forage, graze on pasture, and live with less stress produce meat that is full of nutrients. By choosing clean, all-natural meat, you give your body what it needs to heal:

Rich in Omega-3s & CLA

Meat from pasture-raised animals has a better balance of healthy fats, including more Conjugated Linoleic Acid (CLA), which helps with weight management and supports your immune system.

Bioavailable Vitamins & Minerals

Grass-fed meats have more vitamins A and E, plus important minerals like zinc and iron that help your thyroid and boost your energy.

Lower Toxic Burden

When you choose meats raised without regular antibiotics or added hormones, your liver has less work to do filtering out toxins. This lets your body focus more on healing.

Our Passion for Quality Sourcing

Recommending quality food as medicine is not just something I do at work. It is also how my family lives every day.

My husband, Greg, and I are so passionate about the impact of clean food on chronic disease that in 2019, we started Chicory Hill Farm in Goochland, eventually moving our farm and family to Powhatan in 2021. We wanted to ensure our family, our patients, and our broader community had a trusted, local source of clean, all-natural meats. Whether you live right down the road from us in Powhatan or you meet with us virtually via telehealth, we always encourage our patients to seek out local farmers who prioritize the health of the animal and the land.
